Race Report 2015 Sam Miranda Tour of King Valley

physiohealth-logo-standardSwift Carbon logo The PhysioHealth Swift Carbon Cycling Team continued its run of great results in the inaugural NRS Men’s Tour of the King Valley in North East Victoria between August 20 - August 22. The tour included a 9 km individual time trial, 40 km criterium, and two road race stages over picturesque country that matches anything in the Tour or Giro. The team taking on the challenging course and field of 150 riders, included Jason Lea, Callum Gordon, Sam Fuhrmeister, Kyle Lierich, Aaron Ross, and our stagier from New Zealand Mathias Fitzwater. The first stage time trial saw Jason Lea put in an incredible top 30 effort with a time of 12 minutes 24 seconds, finished ahead of most of his peers only beaten by specialist time trialists who have dedicated years of specific training techniques to master the craft. Callum Gordon also put in an exceptional effort and was placed alongside the genuine general classification contenders. The team set out on the afternoon criterium with instructions to keep out of trouble and ensure that three riders finish with minimum time loss to ensure a good team classification. Kyle Lirich, Callum Gordon and Jason Lea met the plan to perfection, leaving themselves and the team in the perfect position for the two upcoming road stages. Stage three included the famous strada nero and three other unsealed road sections, unique to Australian racing. A course designed to provide the riders with an experience similar to Paris – Roubaix. The result was spectacular racing with the teams preparing their equipment and riders for the conditions dominating some very aggressive racing. The PhysioHealth Swift Carbon Cycling Team having bikes, wheels and tires and most importantly the athletes good enough for the conditions achieved the teams best results so far in the NRS. Ninth and fifteenth on the stage; Second in the King of the Mountains; Fourth overall in the under 23 general classification, tenth overall in the general classification and tenth overall in the teams classification. This fantastic effort was celebrated with a fantastic country meal at the Tatong Tavern. The team set off on the final stage fired up to maintain their general classification standings. However, a high-speed crash involving more than half the field including every rider in the team resulted in the stage being cancelled at the 30 km mark, with overnight standings forming the final results.
