Is posture Really Important?
Posture relates to the position we put our body in during the day and night. When we put our postures in positions that increase the stress on a particular area, we greatly increase the chance of injury. This is made worse with repetitive movements with poor posture and sustained poor posture for any length of time. When we are sitting at a computer, slouching and poking our chin forward greatly increases the stress put on our neck and upper back. This can lead to neck pain, headaches and early degeneration. When we lift heavy objects off the ground, incorrect posture like not bending our knees puts great strain on our lower backs and hips. Lifting with an incorrect posture can lead to lower back disc bulges, facet joints sprains, muscle tears or hip cartilage damage. Even when we sleep we can put our bodies under undue stress. Poor sleeping posture, whether caused by a poor bed, pillow or sleeping habit can cause neck pain, shoulder pain or lower back pain. There are many times during the day when our posture can increase our risk of injury and pain. With correct posture, we can eliminate pain and decrease the risk of it reoccurring. If you have any questions, or have posture-related pain, please do not hesitate to get an assessment from one of our trained physiotherapists.
