Day 4 – Tour Great South Coast
Day 4 of the Tour Great South Coast started with a one hour morning criterium around the potato growing capital of the west - Koroit. The race provided a setting that suited its Irish heritage and original name of Belfast. The rough skinny town streets resulted in aggressive racing and regular falls. By the half way mark the field had been reduced to half and unfortunately PhysioHealth Swift Carbon’s Jason Lea went over his handlebars resulting in a lot of lost skin and some deep cuts that saw him go to hospital after the race for some stitches and dressing of wounds. Being a quality bike rider meant he got back on the bike and finish with the leaders. Mitch Dedman, Aidan Bowe and Callun Gordon also put in strong rides to complete the stage alongside Jason. The place getters in the criterium were Scott Sunderland from Budget Forklift 1st, and Avanti’s Pat Bevin and Pat Shaw 2nd and 3rd respectively. The afternoon stage on the fourth day was a gentle rolling 104 km from Koroit to Peterborough with one windswept 3 km 4% climb 15 km from the finish. The lack of wind and keenness of the three big teams held the race together and a fast big ring stage until the last climb when Avanti’s Pat Bevin got on the front of the bunch at 500 plus watts and blew half the field off the back. The PhysioHealth Swift Carbon team was the only team that had all seven members left in the peloton after the climb. The 60 rider peloton stayed together until the final sprint into Peterborough won by Pat Bevin, with Budget Forklift’s Scott Sunderland 2nd and African Wildlife’s Michael Schweizer 3rd. With final road stage completed the PhysioHealth Swift Carbon team had Jason Lea at 1.15 sec, Aidan Bowe at 1.35 sec, Callum Goron at 5.10 sec, Mitch Dedman at 6.46, Sam Fuhrmeister at 15.36 sec, Aaron Ross at 19.44 sec and Kyle Lierich in his first NRS race at 35.56 sec.
